from ARCADIA NEWS on January 1st, 2018 by Nick Smith see here Arcadia News "TEACHERS WE LOVE WINNER" for February 2018: Angie Berk, Arcadia High School Nominated by: Cathy Massimi What was your path to becoming a teacher? I’m from right in the middle of Illinois and moved here in 1980. I went to Chandler High School and then to ASU, where I got my degree in Mechanical Engineering. I worked in that field for a while and then spent time raising my children. Engineering was never really my passion though. Science was. So, I wasn’t always happy with my job. My parents were both in education, so I was familiar with that career, and I’d spent a lot of time helping out in science classrooms when my kids were in school and I remember really liking it. I did my student teaching at Desert Mountain and taught at Chaparral for six years before coming to Arcadia. You teach both Biology and Physics. How do you balance teaching two different subjects? Everybody thinks it’s a weird combination, but science is science. I bring a lot of biology knowledge into physics class, and vice versa. As an example, we were learning about terminal velocity in physics and using a falcon as an example. We got to learn about how they fly from a biology standpoint, so there are fun crossovers like that. Are there methods of teaching that you have moved away from as you became more experienced? When I first started teaching, I made power points for everything, especially in physics. It was a new technology and everyone thought “look, animation”, you know? I had grown up with chalkboards, so it seemed cool to me! But I noticed that I didn’t get a ton of excitement with it from the students. I was taking some modeling classes at ASU and learning about that method completely changed the way I teach. The modeling curriculum is almost Socratic in the sense that a teacher stays out of it as much as possible. You ask leading questions, but let the kids discover things. I think science should be hands on! If I could do labs every single day, I would do it. Now obviously that’s not always possible, but I’ll always try to look at my schedule and make sure that we do labs several days each week. So instead of saying, here’s the equations, we do a lab where the students collect data, make graphs, and come up with the equations on their own. I like everything to be as hands on as possible. What do you enjoy about teaching at Arcadia High School? I love that Arcadia has such a community feel about it. I talk to kids whose parents, and sometimes even grandparents, went to the school. That’s rare enough, but especially in Phoenix! The kids are proud of being here, you can feel that excited vibe when you go to assemblies and games. It’s a great place to teach! Thursday, February 1st, 2018, American Mountaineer Alison Levine visited Arcadia High School to speak to all Arcadia students about leadership. Ms. Levine is an American mountain climber, sportswoman, explorer and leadership consultant. She lead the first all female expedition to the top of Mount Everest. She is author of On the Edge and the executive producer of a documentary, The Glass Ceiling. She has ascended the highest peaks on every continent and also skied to both the North and South Poles. In 2010, she completed the Adventure Grand Slam by reaching the summit of Mt. Everest. She serves as an adjunct instructor at the U.S. Military Academy. She spoke to the students of Arcadia about her fascinating expedition up Mount Everest and the lessons she learned that she's applied to her own life.
Thank you to Ms. Levine for coming to AHS and sharing her inspirational story and advice with our students. To learn more about Ms. Levine, or hear a presentation similar to the one she gave at Arcadia, please watch the YouTube video below. Thank all of our community for coming together to help with the Division II Winter Trophy Tournament. There were over 300 students and coaches on campus Friday, December 1st and Saturday, December 2nd. It took many people to make this event possible. We need to give a loud shout out to AHS PTO, Mr. Degroote, Rita’s Italian, Safeway’s bakery, Einstein’s Bagels, and Chick-fil-A for helping us feed the 100+ judges. We would also like to thank the Beckis, Degroote, Massimi, Walsh families for their kind donations to our concession stand and any families who dropped off donations to us. A huge shout out to NHS and AASU for welcoming our guests and guiding them to the right classrooms. Special thanks to parent, Pam Walsh, who stepped in as a judge and learned the ropes as she went and parent. Thank you to all the teachers and staff of AHS for sharing their rooms and time with us. The event was a huge success thanks to all of YOU!
UPCOMING GAMES/EVENTS:
Tues 12/12 @ Shadow Ridge (Bus leaves at 2 PM) Fri 12/15 (H) Ironwood Ridge – Team Photos & Pei Wei Fundraiser Thurs 1/4 (H) Williams Field Fri 1/5 @ Verrado (Bus leaves at 2 PM) The Boys soccer team kicked off their regular season last Wednesday at home against Campo Verde, one of last year’s State Finalists. Both the Varsity and JV teams played tough, but came out on the losing end. JV Coach Gabriele had these comments on the JV’s loss: “Despite having only 3 subs (and no subs due to injury for 15 minutes of second half), JV played very well. We fought back from being down 0-2 and tied it 2-2. Then, our players got tired due to lack of subs and lost 2-4. It was a hard fought game. I am very proud of how we didn’t give up at all. Goals were scored by freshman Antonio Clarke and our junior international exchange student, Tákuma Fujiya. The Titans were back in action on Tuesday at Deer Valley. Results will be reported next week.
GO TITANS! Website: http://arcadiaboyssoccer.wixsite.com/soccer The Student Ambassador Club is made up of 19 students, a diverse group of sophomores, juniors and seniors. Our panels of 3-4 students each answer questions from prospective students and parents who attend tours of Arcadia. Two of the most asked questions are:
What are your classes like? Are they harder than middle school? ~short answer: Arcadia offers Honors, AP and dual enrollment classes for many different subjects as well as 'regular ed' options. Arcadia's teachers are highly trained and care a lot about students' learning. Typically, Freshmen do not take AP or dual enrollment classes, but it is possible with an advisor's and teacher's recommendation. Every student is assigned to an Arcadia Guidance Counselor when they enter Arcadia, and keep the same counselor throughout four years of high school. Counselors help navigate required classes as well as electives. How can students get involved on campus? ~short answer: There are many ways to get involved. There are over 50 clubs on campus (for example: Calculus Club, Key Club, Art Honors Society, Athletic Trainers, Baking Club). Students can organize a club for just about any interest area. "Club Rush" is during lunch period each fall where officers host a table, describe what the club is about, and encourage other students to join. Arcadia also has all of the typical athletic teams, some of which are no-cut sports. Sports teams are a great way to get to know kids from multiple grade levels. In addition, Arcadia students have a lot of spirit and fill Chaos Corner, the student section at football games. All students are invited! New to the Arcadia administration staff, Ms. Palatucci joined Arcadia’s Assistant Principal team over the summer. When you visit her office, be prepared for a positive reception from a person who is clearly passionate about her job and about Arcadia’s students. As Assistant Principal, she is responsible for student services, graduation, testing, student government, code of conduct, dress code, and serving as an instructional leader for teachers. Although this is her first year at Arcadia, she has many years of experience in a variety of educational capacities, providing her with a unique perspective. For the past 12 years, Ms. Palatucci worked in the field of special education. She first began as a paraeducator at the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children in 2005. She then became a Behavior Specialist at the same school in 2009. In 2011, she moved to Arizona and taught Special Education at Chaparral High School. She became the Department Chair of Special Education at Chaparral in 2013. Her education includes:
Arcadia’s teachers describe Ms. Palatucci as easy-going while exceeding expectations. She is decisive, not afraid to answer tough questions, ready to help when needed, and is committed to building positive relationships among the entire Arcadia community. She obviously has what is best for the kids at the center of her decision-making. Ms. Palatucci grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. Her favorite class as a student at Brentwood High School was English because she always loved to read. She came to Phoenix just as a tourist, and decided to move here. She has a large extended family, including a little brother, and although her entire family lives in Pittsburgh, they are still close-knit. She visits home a couple times of year. FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT ARCADIA: I love having the opportunity to help people the skills to be successful in life and helping students realize and reach their potential. I also love the diversity of the students at Arcadia and getting to know all the students as individuals. HOBBIES OR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO WHEN NOT WORKING I love to travel, read, watch movies, swim, and play with my dog WHAT MAKES YOU PROUD? Every day I find new things to be proud of! DOG OR CAT? Dog! I have a very old Miniature Pincher named Ricco. A RANDOM FACT ABOUT MS PALATUCCI I lived and taught Special Education in Ireland for 3 months Phoenix, Ariz - Sixty-six students of the Arcadia High School Marching Band competed at ASU’s Sun Devil Stadium Saturday in the ABODA State Division III Championships against seven of the top bands in Arizona. After only four years of Arcadia Marching Band’s inception, and it’s second season of competitive performance, “The Spirit of Arcadia” Marching Band won the First Place State Title. Receiving 82.375 points, they earned the highest 1st place score in Division III history. The Saturday before, November 11th, 2017, Arcadia High School Marching Band also claimed First Place in the AZMBA 2A State Competition, at Campo Verde High School. The 2017 winning program, “Statuesque”, is a scene set in a serene European garden with 6 marble statues on pedestals, played by the Arcadia Color Guard. Using the music of Don Barrett, the show begins and ends with the gentle sound of marimbas and bells. Throughout, the music builds with passion and impressively strong moments as the band marches together in perfect step. As the band plays, the statues come to life to play, dance, and even fall in love. Soon, their time comes to an end, and they return to their pedestals as the gentle sound of the vibraphone from the front ensemble ends the show. Earning first place was a special moment for all the sixty-six members who worked hard since band camp in the hot July sun, daily zero hour practice beginning at six o’clock before school, after school practice twice a week, and competitions every Saturday lasting from morning to night. However, the award was especially emotional for the Arcadia seniors, who began the marching band program in August 2014. Last year, their first year competing, “The Spirit of Arcadia” won second place at the State Championships. The “Spirit of Arcadia” was formed in 2014 under the guidance of AHS band director, Jan Gardner. Mr. Gardner worked with students to create and grow a program to be proud of. While the current Arcadia students were outstanding, Mr. Gardner understood that to continue the program, working with the Elementary and Middle School students was integral to the marching band program's success. Therefore, he worked together with band teacher, Mrs. Terra Hunsicker, from Arcadia feeder schools: Ingleside Middle School, Hopi Elementary School, Tavan Elementary School, and Echo Canyon School. Thru programs like Future Titan Night, where 8th grade band students play with the marching band at a football game, and sharing Winter Concert Performances at Arcadia, students enthusiasm for band was enhanced for the future. It is insight like this from Mr. Gardner that led the program to first place in state in such a short time. He sees greatness in all Arcadia students, and he has high expectations for them, both in high school and beyond. Marching Band season is officially over, but there are more events to come in the school year. “The Spirit of Arcadia” will march in the Parada Del Sol on February 10th, 2018 through Downtown Scottsdale. Watch the ABODA State Championship Performance at https://youtu.be/bgZz1PSEx4c Follow The Spirit of Arcadia on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram at @RKDAMarchBand Name: Jennifer Dukelow Why you chose to work in the district: I graduated from Arcadia in 2001, and I loved it so much that I knew there was no other place I wanted to teach. I told the principal on my way across the stage at graduation that I would come back in four years for a job, and I did! What I like most about what I do: By far, my favorite part of teaching is working with the kids. My students are like my children, and getting to know them as people and learners is so rewarding. Helping a student experience success in a math class, sometimes for the first time, and grow their self-confidence in math is a wonderful experience. Where did you come from: I was born and raised in Phoenix. If I had picked a different occupation, it might have been: A chef or photographer…but truly I can’t imagine doing anything other than teaching. I look forward to my job every day! What I’m looking forward to the most this school year: Getting to know a new group of math students and helping them love math almost as much as I do! My vision for the school: Arcadia is my home. I have spent 4 years here as a student, 1 as a student teacher, and 13 as a teacher. My vision for the school is that it will be/will continue to be a place where students are accepted and feel safe and welcome and where students enjoy coming to school and are successful in learning and growing as people. My interests and hobbies: I have a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old, so most of my free time is spent reading kids’ books, playing tag or hide-and-go-seek, chasing “monsters,” and coloring. However, I also really enjoy reading, painting, photography, and cooking. The best and/or worst time in my life: I would have to say that the best time of my life is NOW! I have a job that I love every day and is fulfilling and rewarding, and I have two amazing kids that are adorable, challenging, and hilarious. Every day is an adventure. The trait(s) I admire in others: There are many traits I admire in others, but a few are courage, honesty, kindness, and humility. People who inspired me (and how): I had an amazing group of teachers when I was a student at Arcadia, and they all inspired me in many ways. I still think about them daily and how grateful I am to them for bringing me to this place in my life that makes me so happy. In particular, Barbara Thomas, who was my math teacher at Arcadia, is the reason I became a high school math teacher. She made me love math, and she was a wonderful mentor when I started my teaching career at Arcadia. My guiding philosophy: All students deserve the chance to be successful and a teacher who truly cares about them. My advice to today’s youth: Work your hardest and know that your teachers care about you. We want to help you, so you just have to ask. One thing I want students to know about me: I love math and I love you! One thing I want parents to know about me: I am very likely to turn your kids into math nerds!
