Numerous Arcadia High School students participated in another Promposal video this year, which was featured on the local television stations. Senior Jacob Staudenmaier, working with multiple other Arcadia film students and friends, successfully created a movie trailer based on Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” movie in asking Senior Elle Overs to the Arcadia Prom. Junior Dash McDonald was in charge of the cinematography and also helped with editing and sound work. Other Arcadia students involved in the production included: Christopher Smith, Argon Stern, Max Swiergol, Dallas Greene, Riley Johnson, Carson Charleton, Max McCauley, Mitch Arndt, Avery Greey, Sarah Schneider, Nikki Keller, Avery Moric, Luke Belalu, Luis Ayala, Gaby Schorr, and Mikko. Jacob, Elle and Dash were interviewed last Friday on “Good Morning Arizona” about the 2018 promposal video, which was a follow up to the viral Emma Stone/LaLaLand promposal in 2017.

Jacob Staudenmaier, Arcadia High School Senior, won the Best Overall Film Award at the 2018 Arizona Student Film Festival Competition on April 14. Jacob’s film “Oasis” won First Place in the High School Category and then was selected as the top film out of all finalists. The 15 finalists were screened at the Harkins Scottsdale 101 Theaters as part of the 2018 Phoenix Film Festival. This year’s competition had the most submissions ever, with films entered by hundreds of students from all over the state of Arizona. The film “Oasis” was an independent project undertaken by Jacob Staudenmaier, with production assistance from Chris Smith. “Oasis” was prepared pursuant to the following prompt: “Without the use of dialogue or voice over, make a film that is less than two minutes long about a character making a difficult and dramatic decision. Show that the character is pulled in two different directions at an emotional level, visualize their process of consideration, and show that they make a decision.” The film “Mute”, which was undertaken as an Arcadia advanced film-making class project, was also selected as a finalist in this year’s competition. Under the direction of Film Instructor Eric Luse, the film students were not permitted to use any music whatsoever in creating the film. The film focused on a situation of teenage bullying. Students involved in “Mute” were Jacob Staudenmaier, Dash McDonald, Lindsay Formica, Shane Babasick, Heather DeGroote and Costi Haig. Started in 2007, the Arizona Student Film Festival is a yearly film competition that celebrates the next generation of Arizona Filmmakers. Students from all over the state of Arizona are invited to submit their best short films under 8 minutes. The films are reviewed by professional judges and only a select few are chosen as Finalists to be screened during the Phoenix Film Festival.

Numerous members of the AHS National Honor Society helped pack meals at the Arcadia Cares: Food For Kids Packathon held on Saturday, March 24 at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. The final number of rice & bean meals packed at the 2018 event were 129,168! This doubled the number of meals packed at the first packathon in 2015 (62,708). The 2018 numbers improved upon the 2017 Packathon results by nearly 40,000 meals. With the 2018 numbers, the four-year total of meals packed is 356,834. Approximately 75% of the meals packed this year will go to the Valley View Community Food Bank to remain in Phoenix to serve needy children, families and individuals. Around 10,000 meals will be sent to the Navajo Nation Reservation in Northern Arizona and the remainder will be shipped to overseas locations. Food for Kidz, a non-profit organization based in Minnesota, provides staple ingredients, such as protein, rice, dehydrated vegetables, seasonings and vitamins, to make nutritious meals. Over 700 volunteers from the Arcadia community assisted with the Fourth Annual Packathon. The Packathon organizers thank the AHS National Honor Society for volunteering their time and supporting the Packathon. WAY TO GO TITANS!
Arcadia High School students earned one of the top awards at the Student Television & Film National Competition (“STN”) held in Nashville, Tennessee last week. The Arcadia students had to create, write, film, produce and edit a short documentary in 8 hours or less for the “Crazy 8s” Documentary Film Competition. The prompt for the documentary was “Sounds Good To Me”. For their efforts, the Titans were awarded one of the highest recognitions among hundreds of schools competing from all over the United States. Nearly 4,000 students from schools throughout the country, including Hawaii and Alaska, competed in multiple contests during the four-day event. In addition to the documentary competition, the Arcadia students were required to showcase their skills and talents in TV news & broadcasting, film writing, cinematography, editing and production based upon certain themes/prompts, specific time constraints and stringent rules. The competition was held March 15-18 at the Gaylord Hotel & Conference Center. Based on auditions, 10 juniors and seniors were selected to represent Arcadia at the National Competition: Jacob Staudenmaier (senior) Nick Forney (senior) Dallas Greene (senior) Narsah (Tate) Kharnis (senior) Christopher Smith (junior) Rachael Schulman (junior) Lindsay Formica (junior) Max Swiergol (junior) Dash McDonald (junior) Alex Teneyck (junior) Eric Luse, Arcadia High School ANN & Film Instructor, and another SUSD teacher served as chaperones for the competition. Thank you to everyone who supported these students with donations and other assistance, making it possible for them to compete against other Film & TV students at the National level. CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE STUDENTS FOR THEIR AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENTS! Ms. Tichio grew up in Hicksville, New York, which is on Long Island. She went to Holy Trinity High School where she was also a Titan! However, she became an Arcadia Titan nine years ago when she joined the Science Department. She teaches Oceanography/Astronomy and Honors Earth Science. In the past, she taught a Dual Enrollment Geology class. Ms. Tichio’s Educational background includes:
Staying active on Arcadia’s campus, Ms. Tichio has served on Site Council, is a member of the Technology Committee, and sponsors the students’ Ambassador Club. Along with Arcadia’s PTO, the Technology Committee has hosted several ‘tech’ lunches where teachers share knowledge with other teachers in order to improve and increase the use of tech-related materials in classrooms and beyond. While not teaching, you might see Ms. Tichio training for ultra-marathons (any race over 26.2 miles)!! She runs 6-7 days a week. She has completed several 50k’s, 50-milers (she won her last one), and attempted a 100-miler but broke her tailbone six weeks before the race and ended up dropping out at mile 59. This June, she will be running the San Diego 100 in hopes to redeem herself. (as if running 59 miles wasn’t a significant accomplishment in itself!) Ms. Tichio loves her students. She really enjoys getting to know them and hopefully inspiring them to do things they never would have thought of doing. HOBBIES OR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO WHEN NOT WORKING When not running, I also enjoy hiking and traveling as much as possible. DOG OR CAT PERSON? I have one of each but I prefer dogs ☺. A RANDOM FACT ABOUT MS TICHIO: I was an adjunct at Glendale Community College and taught Physical Geology. This is Adrian Chang’s first full year at Arcadia, however, he is not new to the campus. His first experience at Arcadia was through a random placement with Mrs. Dukelow for an internship. He describes the internship as one of the luckiest things to ever happen to him, learning so much from her that he knew he just had to come back to student teach at Arcadia as well… which he did! Later, after graduating from ASU in December 2016, Mr. Chang jumped on an opportunity to fill in for a math teacher who was on a leave of absence for the spring 2017 quarter. Mr. Chang describes himself as lucky, however, Arcadia students and staff are the lucky ones!... fortunate to be the recipients of his excellent teaching skills, positive attitude, enthusiasm and devotion to all Arcadia students! Mr. Chang’s educational background includes:
In addition to teaching Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, Mr. Chang serves as the Assistant Varsity Volleyball Coach, is the teacher-sponsor for the Gosh Yarn Knit Club (students who teach peers how to knit bracelets which are taken to children’s hospitals), and is a volunteer chaperone at Calculus Camp in the spring (every spring, teachers from Arcadia, Coronado, Desert Mountain, and Saguaro High Schools spend a weekend in Prescott helping 100’s of AP Calc students review a year’s-worth of calculus curriculum for the upcoming AP exam). Aside from teaching, volleyball is another passion of Mr. Chang’s. So when Varsity Coach Jackie Bunker asked if he would like to be a part of her coaching staff this year, he immediately accepted! Mr. Chang grew up in Scottsdale, and went to Desert Canyon Middle School. Upon finishing 8th grade, his family had the opportunity to move to South Korea and live closer to relatives for a few years. He attended an American high school in Seoul, Korea. FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT ARCADIA: Getting to interact with the amazing students at Arcadia every day! HOBBIES OR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO WHEN NOT WORKING Play and coach volleyball, read, spend time with my family DOG OR CAT? Definitely dogs! A RANDOM FACT ABOUT MR CHANG I've been to five of the seven continents. Submitted by Amanda McCauley Spring 2018 UPCOMING FOOTBALL EVENTS
Arcadia High School is pleased to introduce Kerry Taylor as their new head football coach. An Arizona resident, Coach Taylor played for Chandler Hamilton High School and Arizona State University prior to playing in the National Football League - including time with the Arizona Cardinals. Coach Taylor brings not just an impressive playing resume with him to Arcadia, but also coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels. He is excited for the opportunity to work with the Arcadia student-athletes to build skill, leadership, and character that will lead to success on the field and beyond. Arcadia Principal Todd Stevens shares, “Coach Taylor will bring an infectious positive attitude to the football program and he will work tirelessly to ensure the best possible experiences for the members of the football team.” Athletic Director Cher Fesenmaier agrees, “There is an undeniable presence when you’re in the same room with Coach Taylor. He exudes enthusiasm that is contagious and we couldn’t be more thrilled that Coach Taylor is now an Arcadia Titan! Many of our student-athletes aspire to where Coach Taylor has been, so his experience at all three levels will serve Arcadia well.” Scottsdale Unified School District Athletic Director Nathan Slater stated “Coach Taylor will bring instant energy to the Arcadia football program along with NFL playing experience. We feel fortunate to have Kerry join the Scottsdale team.” EMAIL SENT TO SUSD PARENT FROM PRESIDENT OF SUSD GOVERNING BOARD ON FEBRUARY 28th, 2018 Dear SUSD Parents, I write to let you know that our school district's Governing Board has named Dr. Amy Fuller to serve as Acting Superintendent while Superintendent Denise Birdwell is on administrative leave. The action was taken last night. Those of you in the Coronado Learning Community may recognize Dr. Fuller's name: she is the District's administrator in charge of overseeing the Coronado Success Initiative, which began last year at Coronado High School. She will continue in that capacity while serving as Acting Superintendent. The Governing Board and I are most grateful that Dr. Fuller is willing to take on this assignment at this time. We are confident she will serve your students and schools, our staff and SUSD well, and know that the impressive progress that has been made at Coronado during the past year will continue. I also want to let you know that the Governing Board voted formally last night to suspend the proposed Hohokam Elementary School and Central Kitchen projects. We also instructed our legal counsel to pursue action to terminate the contracts for both projects. Lastly, the Governing Board wants you to know that we continue to work collaboratively with the Attorney General's Office to resolve claims in the legal complaint it filed last week regarding work underway at Cheyenne Traditional School. Thank you for taking time to read this letter. While the District is undergoing some difficult times right now, please know that your Governing Board is fully committed to restoring community confidence and pride in SUSD. Sincerely, Barbara Perleberg President SUSD Governing Board Special Kid Field Day, is a very special day when SUSD self-contained students with special needs in kindergarten through eighth grade come together to attend an event built to support their specific individualized needs. Special Kid Field Day takes place at a local park, using the park and recreation facilities. There are over thirty stations with modified activities, facilitated by high school student volunteers (including but not limited to student council members, student leadership, cheerleaders, athletic teams, etc.), also community members including, Scottsdale Police Department (i.e. mounted police, K-9 unit, motorcycles, etc.), fire department, local sports mascots (i.e. Big Red from Cardinals, Suns' Gorilla, Baxter from the Arizona Diamondbacks, etc.), the Shriners, therapy and service dogs, and much more. The event addresses each students, social, emotional, sensory regulation, gross motor, fine motor, communication, math reasoning, ELA, science, and social studies goals and standards. The event takes place for two to three hours.
Special Kid Field Day is truly a life-changing event for so many students and provides them an opportunity to be successful and experience so many amazing achievements that they otherwise might miss out on. Unfortunately, so many times people with special needs feel isolated and separated, and this is their chance to be able to be fully integrated leaders and productive members of a cohesive team. Frequently, this is the highlight of, not only the students' year, but the special education staff's as well. For this outstanding event to take place, we are in need of having 70-80 typical high school students to assist in running the different station and mentoring the different students with special needs. We are reaching out to all the high schools to seek the outstanding student leaders and different groups to assist in our wonderful day. These students can be from different backgrounds (i.e. the band, color guard, student council, national honor society, etc.). This is Miss Vitale’s second year as a teacher in Arcadia’s Math Department. She teaches Geo Trig H and Algebra I. Arcadia is lucky to have such an energetic, dedicated and passionate teacher in the math department! In the spring of her first year, she even volunteered to be part of the team that accompanied the AB and BC Calc students to Prescott for a weekend of Calc Camp. It was three days of tutoring almost 200 students in preparation for the annual AP Calc exam. She plans to go again this year! Her education background includes: · BA in Secondary Education, Mathematics ASU Miss Vitale has always wanted to be a teacher. When she was younger, she loved helping other students. She was a math tutor in high school at Desert Mountain and in college at ASU’s Math Tutoring Center. Initially, she planned to earn a degree in engineering (her dad is an Electrical Engineer). However, after the first year, Miss Vitale realized she should pursue her passion… teaching!. She truly enjoys working with and helping students learn math. So, she switched majors, did her student teaching at Saguaro High School, and applied for a job in SUSD. Students in Miss Vitale’s class look forward to learning through a variety of teaching methods and strategies. In addition to traditional lectures, review and practice, Miss Vitale helps students master concepts utilizing technology and programs like Kahoot. She also mixes it up with scavenger hunts, gallery walks, and relay race activities to get the kids up and moving and working with each other. Miss Vitale gets excited about finding and trying new Project-Based-Learning strategies, realizing that learning can be enhanced when students become actively involved in the learning process. FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT ARCADIA: The freedom to be yourself. I can “nerd out” about math all day and be an individual. HOBBIES OR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO WHEN NOT WORKING I love to read, go to the gym, listen to music and go to concerts. I go to a lot of Ska Concerts. DOG OR CAT? Dog. Have never had a pet yet, though. WHAT MAKES YOU PROUD? Those light bulb moments when a student “gets something” that was difficult for them. A RANDOM FACT ABOUT MISS VITALE I played saxophone in the 2011 New Year's Day Parade in London.
